Drive Modanville, The Channon, Protesters Falls
Hit the road
On your way to The Channon, stop at Annie’s Country Bakery in Modanville and enjoy a coffee and indulge in freshly-baked bread, pies, sandwiches, sweet treats and more. Continue on Dunoon Road for about 15kms, then turn left onto The Channon Road. Follow this road for approximately 5kms to reach the village of The Channon.
Gateway to natural wonders
The Channon, a charming village nestled on the edge of Nightcap National Park, serves as the gateway to Terania Creek and Protesters Falls—an area celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty and significant cultural and environmental value.
Local tip: The Channon Craft Market is Australia’s oldest market of its kind and is a must visit. The market is held on the second Sunday of every month at Coronation Park. Explore a diverse array of art, craft, woodwork, pottery, clothing, jewellery, produce, and plants, alongside live music, children’s rides, craft workshops, and lively buskers.
The Channon Tavern, located in a historic butter factory beside Terania Creek, is a welcoming family-friendly pub. Enjoy a drink or lunch inside, on the verandah or in the picnic area while the kids have fun on the jungle gym.
Fancy a picnic? The Channon General Store stocks local produce, takeaway food, cold drinks and ice creams. It is the perfect place to stock up on supplies to enjoy in nature.
Explore a national treasure
Follow Terania Creek Road from The Channon for about 15km as it winds its way up into Nightcap National Park. At the end of the road you’ll find the Terania Creek picnic area. This was the scene of ground-breaking protests that not only paved the way for the national park’s creation and recognition as a Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage site in 1986 but also helped end all rainforest logging in NSW.
Nearby is the walking track to Protesters Falls, named after the anti-logging protesters of the late 1970s. The 1.4km return walk starts with a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through Bangalow palms before turning into a track.
Swimming is not permitted in the area as it is the home to the endangered Fleay’s barred frog.
After you have explored Protesters Falls head back to The Channon. The Channon Tavern has live music on Friday and Sundays, unwind and enjoy some live entertainment, a cold drink and country hospitality.
